User Reviews

Pillars offers accurate, easy-to-read prayer times with an ad-free, privacy-conscious interface and useful free features like widgets and tracking. The main drawbacks are aggressive monetization (premium required for key features and persistent prompts), onboarding frictions (no skip option) and billing/data concerns, plus occasional reliability issues.
Pros
  • Accurate prayer times with a simple, readable interface.
  • Ad-free, privacy-friendly design that feels uncluttered.
  • Useful free features (widget, prayer tracker with streaks, Ramadan tracker) without paying.
  • Consistent reliability and a long-standing, well-regarded app in the Muslim community.
Cons
  • Aggressive monetization: core features (e.g., widgets, reminders) require a premium subscription and there are constant prompts to subscribe, with little ability to skip onboarding.
  • Billing and refund issues: unintentional charges, slow or unresponsive support, and concerns about charge transparency.
  • Data collection before paying: users feel data is collected before any disclosure of paid model.
  • Poor onboarding experience: lengthy, non-skippable onboarding that frustrates users and even excludes some older users.
  • Reliability concerns: occasional bugs (e.g., notifications not firing ahead of prayer) and updates that hamper free access.

I used to love this app for being so minimalistic and seamless. arguably the most useful feature of the app, was being able to add a widget to your phone’s home page with the current prayer time and time remaining until the next one. With this feature, I was able to automatically get a reminder for prayer at a glance of my phone, which was the most useful feature which compelled me to stay true and complete all of my prayers since it’s a constant reminder. Now, this feature which was once free, is now locked behind a paywall forcing me to buy premium if I want to continue to use the most useful feature. For many of us, the problem with keeping our prayers is the constant reminder, the nudge in the right direction that we can’t blatantly ignore. If I was already so pious and dutiful in my prayers, I wouldn’t need an app, that I’d need to physically open, I’d already be aware of the timings intuitively. Now, you are assuming that most of your consumers just need to know the exact timing, which is far from the purpose of an app such as this, which is designed to help people become more disciplined, keep track of the prayers, and be held accountable gently. Now, as the app is, the onus is on me to voluntarily search for the app and open it 5 times a day. If I had such an intuitive affinity towards never missing a prayer in the first place, what’s the point of this app?
