During the Cold War, progress in terms of ballistics, materials and production took firearm development to new heights: the assault rifle received a more prominent role, the sniper rifle became more sophisticated, firearm calibres saw an increased level of standardisation and man-portable anti-air systems became available. Since then, firearm technology has continued to evolve at a rapid pace, bringing new ideas in terms of ammunition, operation and performance.
