Features & Capabilities

Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium's Beach Conditions Reporting System (BCRS) is an application for the public to view beach conditions reports submitted by trained volunteer Beach Ambassadors. The BCRS provides real and near-time data from participating beaches including parameters such as flag color, water temperature, surf conditions, crowds, respiratory irritation, dead fish, beach amenities and many more! Users can also contribute reports of their own observations through the Community Science Portal on the BCRS. We aim to engage community members in scientific observation and aid in making informed decisions that can both protect public health and improve beach experiences.

Happy beach going!

Cons
  • Reports are frequently outdated or not timely, sometimes weeks or months old.

  • Slow loading times and general performance problems (spinning wheel).
  • Comment submission and other functions sometimes don't work due to email/verification issues.

I live in Fort Myers, FL and of course I know there is drift algae and other things that affect our waters. But when I am literally standing on the exact beach, that I used the app to determine where I am going for the day, and the app says the water is clear and there is no drift algae, and I am standing in ankle deep drift algae, can’t see the floor of the ocean, and it smells like dead fish, clearly the app is absolutely useless. Deleted and unsubscribed from the emails. I’ve wasted so many trips this summer “chasing” the optimal beach conditions based on the input of the beach ambassadors of this app - I will just take my chances the good old fashioned way. Mother Nature is going to do what she is going to do - I won’t waste my time on these lies.

The development team fixed the issues with the app and emails. The reports are now up-to-date. I metal detect on the west coast of Florida and find the reports beneficial when selecting which beach to go to.

As of April 13 the last beach reports were from March 13. With active red tide in the area it would be nice to have beach conditions.
