Features & Capabilities

Have you ever wondered what dog breed you're looking at? Dog Scan uses modern AI to identify breeds from live camera input or a photo. Point your phone at the dog and tap Scan to get results in real time. It also includes an Attention Whistle to grab your pet’s attention for better photos.

All processing happens on your device, so no internet connection is required and no images are uploaded to servers. You can also scan existing photos from your camera roll for quick breed identification, making it privacy-first and fast.

User Reviews

User reviews largely condemn Dog Scan for inaccuracy and unreliable results. Repeated misidentifications, inconsistent scan outcomes, and a pay-to-use model drive negative sentiment. While a minority report it works for them and price can be reasonable, the majority view the app as not worth the cost given frequent incorrect identifications and usability issues.
Pros
  • A small number of users report that the app works for their dog and returns results.
  • Some reviewers consider the lifetime purchase (around $2.99) reasonably priced.
Cons
  • Inaccurate breed identifications across many dogs, often labeling purebreds as mixed or giving incorrect results.
  • Inconsistent results across scans; the same dog can yield different breeds on different attempts.
  • Pay-to-use model: most features require payment after a single free scan, with many reviewers calling it not worth the money.
  • Perceived as a rip-off or poor value due to frequent inaccuracies and costs.
  • Technical usability issues: camera locking problems and payment method setup difficulties.

All this thing can do is recognize that you are pointing the camera at a dog. And half the time it doesn’t do that!! It called my American Hairless a “mixed breed” including a Chinese Crested and a Pharaoh dog. It called my Chihuahua, a mixed breed as well.

This app called my papered Shihtzu a Llaso Appso and our papered mini long haired dachshund a mixed breed. That’s all you can do is scan a dog and if it gives you the correct information then it’s probably good info, but when it gives you the wrong information, it’s worthless. It has little noises like whistling and squeaking that you can create but overall, it’s not worth the money.
