Overview

Features & Capabilities

Runestone Text Editor is a lightweight plain-text and code editor for iPhone and iPad. It provides syntax highlighting for HTML, JavaScript, JSON, Markdown, Swift, Python, PHP, YAML, and more, plus adjustable themes, line numbers, a powerful find-and-replace tool, and Prettier formatting. The editor uses the standard document browser for a Files-like experience, supports font and size customization (including custom fonts), shows the current line and column, and can open files from the Share Sheet or print documents.

Runestone is built on the open-source Runestone framework and aims to be the smallest editor that preserves essential code-editing features. Premium options unlock additional icons, show line numbers, highlight the active line, adjust line height and spacing, visualize tabs and line breaks, set a page guide at a chosen column, and remember language per file. It also supports soft tabs, tab width, and tab-behavior customization, plus Markdown heading scaling and selective code-block highlighting. Learn more at github.com/simonbs/runestone.

User Reviews

Runestone is praised as a lean, fast, code-oriented editor with an open core and one-time payment. Users highlight solid code editing, file creation/import, autosave, and a clean, minimal UI that feels like a lightweight VSCode-style tool. Common drawbacks include reliability issues (crashes and sometimes failed saves), most features gated behind a paywall, and workflow quirks such as not being able to view created pages without uploading elsewhere and paste-related formatting glitches.
Pros
  • Code editing capability on iPad (writing/editing code with code playgrounds)
  • Lean, fast, clean UI with no bloat
  • Open-source core with a one-time payment (Dracula theme option)
  • Autosave feature
  • File creation and import support
Cons
  • Cumbersome workflow to view and edit created pages (requires uploading to an external site to view/edit)
  • Reliability issues (frequent crashes and occasional silent saves/undo problems)
  • Most advanced features are behind a paywall
  • Copy/paste can introduce extra line breaks and editing glitches (formatting issues)

I have fallen in love with this app. It is my go-to text app for writing. I do have one feature on my wish list: word count. Can you please add a word count option on the status line? That would take this app over the top for writers. Please?

I like the simplicity of the app. Would it be possible to add a preview view for html or markdown? Let know if it’s in premium purchase and I’ll get it asap.
