Notesnook is a private, open-source note-taking app with end-to-end encryption enabled by default. Notes are encrypted on your device before syncing, protecting them from advertisers and unauthorized access with XChaCha20-Poly1305 and Argon2.

Write and organize everything from quick lists to thesis chapters using Markdown, headings, tables, code blocks, math, outlines and images. Use nested notebooks, tags, favorites, pinned notes, instant search and linked notes to build a personal knowledge base. Notesnook syncs across iPhone, iPad, Mac and the web, with encrypted reminders, version history, dark mode, themes, note publishing and an ad-free web clipper. Import notes from other apps, Markdown or HTML files. The free plan includes unlimited notes, devices and full end-to-end encryption, while paid plans add task lists, recurring reminders, additional storage, app lock, an encrypted vault and more.

Never really write reviews but this app is worth it. More customizable and private than iPhones notes app. I only use the free version and I don’t feel pushed to pay for it by ads or restricted functions: a much appreciated rarity! If you’re considering- just download it.

I needed to find a replacement for Evernote, and Notesnook is even better than what I hoped for. I’ve been using Evernote for 7 years (since 2019) as a paid professional service, and I have seen severe performance degradation over the last 2-3 years. I got a notice that they increased my yearly subscription price from $140 to $240 - on the same day I couldn’t get a note to open on my phone because of an aforementioned new performance issue. I didn’t mind the price increase alone, but Evernote’s service is now full of AI slop and unacceptable software development practices. For a replacement, I considered Joplin, Notesnook, and Obsidian. Notesnook is user friendly, boasts the same core features as Evernote without the slop, adds additional nice-to-have features like nesting notebooks, and the syncing is flawless between my devices. I am now paying $70 a year for more features than I would have with Evernote at $240.
