Features & Capabilities

With OVpay, you can use your contactless card or phone to check in and out of Dutch public transport. This is the accompanying app—perfect for both seasoned travellers and first-timers.

Meet the OVpay app:

• Confirm check-ins and check-outs Not sure if you’ve checked in or out? Find out under ‘Journeys’. You can also opt to get a notification every time you check in or out.

• Adjust missed check-ins or check-outs Forgotten to check in or out? No problem! You can adjust missed check-ins and check-outs in the app. Up to 60 days after your journey.

• All journeys and travel costs in a one overview View all your journeys and travel costs from the past 18 months under ‘Journeys’.

• Create travel expense overviews Send travel expense overviews to your employer straight from the app. Or have it email you a PDF. All you need to do is select the month and trips—the app will take care of the rest!

• Add multiple cards You can now add up to 10 cards to the app. Give them a name and colour so you can easily keep them apart. Perfect if you use different cards for travel.

• Add your age-based discount If you qualify for a 34% age-based discount, you can add it to your card. In the app, share your name, date of birth and a photo and you’re good to go.

User Reviews

Users overall like OVpay for its trip and spending dashboard, and its ability to log charges and provide event notifications. However, multiple reviews highlight core reliability issues: frequent crashes on newer iPhones, repeated login and 403 errors when adding payment methods, and frustrating onboarding with missing instructions. These stability and UX problems, plus inconsistent app-website workflows, hinder adoption. Some users also note regional limitations where the app only logs transactions rather than enabling payment. Reliability and clear onboarding are the top needs to improve user satisfaction.
Pros
  • Provides a dashboard to view trips and monitor spending
  • Shows charges after rides and supports reviewing payments
  • Offers notifications for transit events
  • Tracks check-in/out history and spending for an audit trail
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and instability on newer iPhone models, including loading spinners
  • Problems adding cards due to UI loops and 403 errors when registering payment methods
  • Persistent sign-in and access issues (e.g., repeated login attempts and "Access denied" errors)
  • Inconsistent onboarding with missing or unclear instructions; app and website steps don’t align
  • Regions or configurations where the app cannot be used to pay and is limited to transaction logging

Step 1 - download app and set up an account. Step 2 - use a debit, credit or mobile payment to pay for any kind of public transit ride (train, tram, bus, etc). To do this, scan your payment method at an entry gate and at the completion of your ride, exit gate. Step 3 - Access your payment method account to look up the charge for the ride you just took. Once that charge has posted on your account you can now register that payment method on the OVpay app. Now you have an overview of your trips in the app.

The app kept glitching and crashing for me. When I finally was able to make an account it would not let me add my debit or credit card and had no other options to pay

Signing in is only successful after 20 tries if you are lucky. Signing out takes even more patience. And do not even try to delete your account, it will not let you do it. What a nightmare!!
