ECG Recorder for Polar H10 Apple

ECG Recorder for Polar H10

Saves data displays live chart

Features & Capabilities

Record ECG, heart rate, R-R intervals, and HRV with your Polar H10.

This app connects to the Polar H10 heart rate sensor and records three raw data types: electrocardiogram (ECG), heart rate (HR), and R-R intervals (RR). It can also calculate heart rate variability (HRV) from the recorded RR intervals. Minimum H10 firmware version required for ECG is 3.0.35.

Live charts are available for ECG, HR, RR, and HRV. You can save screenshots of the live charts to Photos, and you can record videos of the live view using the iOS screen recorder from Control Center.

With an active “Enable premium features” subscription (IN-APP purchase), recordings are saved to the app’s folder in the Files app using the recording start time as the file name.

Premium features include:

  • Live ECG, HR, RR, and HRV charts
  • ECG export as .csv, .edf (EDF+), and legacy ascii text
  • HR and RR export as .csv and legacy ascii text
  • HRV export as .csv
  • PDF export of the last 30 seconds of the live ECG view on ECG-style A4 paper at 25 mm/s and 10 mm/mV
  • Apple Health export for heart rate, beat-to-beat timing, and HRV (SDNN)

CSV exports now include local timestamps and elapsed seconds, so in most cases no separate time column has to be created manually.

ECG DATA ECG data is recorded at 130 Hz according to specification (my device works at 130.061 Hz) in microvolts (µV). That means one value every 7.692 milliseconds. A 10 minute recording contains about 78000 values. ECG values can be divided by 1000 to convert them to millivolts (mV). The “Set marker” button in the live ECG chart adds a value of 2000 µV to the data so markers can be found easily in graphs or by searching the data.

ECG recordings are also exported directly as .edf (EDF+) files and can be opened in the open source software EDFbrowser. Sample ECG data and demo videos for import into Apple Numbers and EDFbrowser are available here: https://ecgh10.app/

HR DATA About one heart rate value is recorded per second.

RR DATA The RR interval is the time between two successive R-waves of the QRS signal on the electrocardiogram. RR intervals are recorded in milliseconds.

HRV DATA HRV is calculated from accepted RR intervals and exported as RMSSD and SDNN in milliseconds.

The app is free to download so you can connect to a device and get a first impression. A few seconds of the live charts can be viewed for free. To unlock all premium features, choose one of the available IN-APP purchases. Each subscription includes a one week free trial.

Subscription will be charged to your iTunes account at confirmation of purchase and renew automatically unless auto-renewal is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account will be charged for renewal at the original subscription price. Subscriptions can be managed in your iTunes Account Settings. Any unused portion of a free trial, if offered, will be forfeited when purchasing a subscription.

User Reviews

Reviewers praise ECG Recorder for Polar H10 for continuous ECG data capture, RR intervals, live plotting, and easy export to spreadsheets or plotting tools. It’s handy for workouts and sleep monitoring, and the developer responds quickly. Main drawbacks include licensing/payments issues, Bluetooth connectivity problems, timeouts on longer recordings, and the raw data format lacking ready-made visualization templates and file-location clarity. Overall, strong ECG-data capabilities marred by licensing, connectivity, and data-use usability concerns.
Pros
  • Records and streams ECG data from Polar H10, including RR intervals.
  • Live plotting on iPhone and export to spreadsheets or plotting software.
  • Easy to use.
  • Useful for monitoring workouts and sleep-related heart-rate changes.
  • Responsive developer support.
Cons
  • Recurring subscription/licensing problems (lifetime access not honored, prompts to pay again, cross-device billing, and cancellation difficulties).
  • Connectivity/pairing issues with Polar H10 (Bluetooth pairing failures; sometimes nothing happens after tapping Connect).
  • Timeouts and incomplete saves during long ECG recordings (timeouts around 2 hours and missing data).
  • Raw data output lacks visualization templates and can be hard to visualize; output files locating can be confusing.

I tried to locate the file, however, I’m unable to find it. Can you please help with that?

Works exceedingly well for monitoring my exercises (rowing machine, hiking, and walking). An unexpected benefit was its invaluable help in diagnosing the heart rate subtleties (via the 'R-R Interval' and 'ECG Stream') associated with my nighttime sleep issues. Live plotting on the iPhone, along with data exporting to plotting software (spreadsheets, custom computer programming) makes this an invaluable tool.

I am trying to access the app after paying for the lifetime membership but it doesn’t allow me to access the features that comes with it and instead prompts me to pay again. Will revise review if/when this is fixed. Definitely not fair to not be able to use what I paid for and then get asked to pay again for it.
