Features & Capabilities

Reality Mixer turns your iPhone or iPad into a Mixed Reality recorder for VR apps and games. Use iOS screen recording to create MR videos without a PC, with options for a green screen or background filtering to produce augmented reality-like recordings.

Features include 4 calibration steps and 4 modes: Virtual Green Screen, Avatars, Green Screen, and Spectator. It's free and open-source with no PC required, and it works with Oculus Quest 1/2. No green screen is needed on A12+ devices, and LIDAR can help. It also lets you filter the background layer for augmented reality-style recordings, and you can start/stop recording from the iOS Control Center for convenience.

User Reviews

Reality Mixer is praised for a straightforward setup, not requiring pricey gear, and solid output once calibrated. It’s free and well-documented, with setup videos helping users. The main drawbacks are recurring stability and compatibility problems: frequent connection errors when starting mixed reality, compatibility gaps with Quest 2 and Meta updates (Quest 3 support requested), calibration and alignment problems needing repeated attempts, noticeable lag during recording and gameplay, and occasional freezes or disconnections. When it works, it’s a valuable MR capture tool for Beat Saber and similar games, but stability and device compatibility remain major limitations.
Pros
  • Easier setup than PC MR apps and a generally user-friendly workflow.
  • No expensive equipment required; works with standard hardware.
  • Free app with positive community feedback and helpful developer support.
  • Good output quality once calibration is set up.
  • Clear instructions and helpful setup videos (YouTube) aid calibration.
Cons
  • Frequent connectivity errors and unknown/unable-to-connect messages when starting MR.
  • Compatibility issues with Quest 2 and Meta updates; lack of Quest 3 update support.
  • Calibration/alignment problems requiring multiple attempts; alignment drifts.
  • Lag/latency during recording or gameplay.
  • Stability issues like freezes during calibration and intermittent disconnections.
