User Reviews

Retrogram is praised for its charming UI and deep word list, with inline definitions adding learning value, and is favored by some over the NYT Spelling Bee. However, the app faces widespread criticism for an expensive, pay-to-play model, inconsistent word eligibility, occasional bugs, and no archive to replay past puzzles.
Pros
  • Striking UI and visuals with a polished, cute design; intuitive and easy to use, including an optimized iPad layout.
  • Rich vocabulary and thoughtful word curation that many players feel exceeds other pangram games.
  • Definitions, inline notes, and occasional word commentary add educational and entertaining value.
  • Seen by some reviewers as a preferable alternative to NYT Spelling Bee due to design and gameplay.
Cons
  • High subscription cost with limited free access (only one daily puzzle without paying).
  • Dictionary/word list inconsistencies: many common words missing or not accepted, unclear which dictionary is used.
  • Bugs and inconsistent puzzle behavior (words accepted on one day but not another, occasional progress loss) and occasional glitches.
  • Lack of a puzzle archive past puzzles, preventing replay of older days.

This game is almost perfect. The only problem I have with it is that if the word isn’t in the everyday lexicon then it isn’t recognized. Would it kill to use the Oxford dictionary? There are more than dime a dozen words.

This game has more vocabulary than few other pangram games. I like the UI of this game the most. I especially like the inline definitions on wider screens (iPad).
