Seed and Spade: Garden Planner Apple

Seed and Spade: Garden Planner

Garden Companion and Assistant

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Seed and Spade is an easy-to-use garden planner based on Square Foot Gardening. It features drag-and-drop seed placement, unobtrusive push notifications for watering, fertilizing, harvesting, and removal, plus plant compatibility checks to avoid neighbors that clash. It also offers sprout and maturity estimates and a growing knowledge base that expands with each release.

Best of all, it's free and ad-free; earnings come only from affiliate seed or equipment referrals. This Chrome extension helps you plan, track progress, avoid disease and plant conflicts, and quickly learn how to care for and harvest a wide range of plants right from your browser.

User Reviews

Seed and Spade is praised for being free, easy to use, helpful watering reminders, companion planting alerts, and customization. However, multiple reviews flag a limited plant/seed catalog with missing common varieties and a desire for a larger database and seed sources, limiting its usefulness for some gardens. Overall, it's beginner-friendly and useful for planning, but content breadth and ongoing expansion are the main drawbacks.
Pros
  • The app is free to use.
  • Easy to use / beginner-friendly.
  • Watering reminders and watering guidance.
  • Companion planting notifier helps with plant placement.
  • Customization options for plants, seeds, and labeling (custom plants, icons, etc.).
Cons
  • Insufficient plant/seed variety in the database; many common vegetables and herbs are missing.
  • Missing specific plants and varieties (e.g., jalapeños, parsley, asparagus, marigold, pumpkins) across reviews.
  • Desire for a larger database with more seeds and seed sources/links.

The App is free . I like the custom icon. Place it in the grid and then you can label it as you want. I used to draw a diagram of what where and when. Now I plot as I go so as the seeds sprout I can update the app to better inform me of what needs to be done.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

i really like the concept of this app and it is easy to use. however, there are not many types of produce to choose from. specially if your planting a specific kind of vegetable. ex. no jalapeños which are totally different than an unnamed category of peppers. no flowers such as marigold to help distinguish where to plant in the garden.
