Features & Capabilities

his app is designed for simple calculations of insulin doses in the Canadian home and school setting (although calculations can also be done in U.S. mg/dL blood glucose units). There are 4 screens available: The “Simple Insulin Bolus” screen calculates an insulin dose for people on multiple daily injections (MDI) based on carb ratio, correction/sensitivity factor (ISF), target BG (the default is 6 mmol/L or 100 mg/dL for daytime, and 8 mmol/L or 120 mg/dL for bedtime), carbs to be consumed, and current BG. The “Simple Insulin Scale” screen generates a simplified insulin sliding scale for people who are on a fixed dose of carbs at a meal, based on baseline insulin dose, ISF, and target BG. The “Full Sliding Scale” screen generates a full insulin scale for people on MDI based on carb ratio, ISF, and target BG. The “Correcting for Arrows” screen allows CGMS users to calculate an increase or decrease in insulin dose (or carbs) to account for positive or negative direction arrows.

User Reviews

BolusCalc is valued for its calculation options and ability to save meal profiles, and users find it easy to use. Recurring negatives are data loss of stored numbers/meal settings, regional home-location resets to Canada, and stability issues like freezing/crashing. There are also UI/layout concerns regarding screenConfig and meal settings. Overall, it offers useful functionality when stable, but reliability and localization bugs are the main repeated drawbacks.
Pros
  • Easy to use for insulin calculations and manual injections.
  • Offers multiple calculation methods based on insulin sensitivity.
  • Supports multiple meal/settings configurations (four meals) to accommodate different regimens.
  • Saves settings/preferences so you don't have to re-enter data each time.
Cons
  • Stored numbers and meal settings can disappear or reset.
  • App auto-switches to Canada and cannot set USA home location.
  • App freezes or crashes during use.
  • UI presents a four-screen expectation but users report a single-screen experience, causing confusion about layout and meal settings.

I think this App is great!! Makes simple Bolus calculations easy. I just wish I could save multiple users all at the same time. (Please add this into your next update!)

Every time it updates it resets everything to zero and to the Canadian standard! Please find away so the settings carry over!

Was working fine, then, my stored numbers were gone. Also, now it won’t let me put USA for home. Stuck on Canada? I updated the app and reset and the bugs they said were fixed were def not fixed. Same issue.
