Features & Capabilities

Timegrapher X analyzes the ticking sound of a mechanical watch to measure its accuracy rate, beat error, and amplitude. The app is specifically optimized to work with the Apple EarPods' headset microphone. Ideally, the headset microphone and the watch crown should be slightly pressed together, as this greatly improves the level of detail and diagram quality. The better the contact, the stronger the signal.

Timegrapher X consists of two separate modules (tabs):

The "INSTANT" module shows how the watch is behaving in the short term, or "right now". It is very similar to a traditional timegrapher device, with the added benefits of a real-time waveform display and a high-detail diagram display.

The "LONG TEST" module is a graphical data logger, which helps you observe the long-term behavior of a watch. Various chart indicators are available, such as average rate, moving rate history, rate drift over time, and more. Long-term measurements for up to 12 hours can be conducted for in-depth analysis of the watch being tested.

Timegrapher X Pro (in-app upgrade) provides these additional features:

• Save and share branded, printable PDF reports for each measurement • Export raw measurement data as a .csv file for spreadsheet analysis • Conduct long-term measurements for up to 120 hours

User Reviews

Timegrapher X is highly praised for delivering practical, wallet-friendly watch regulation results and works well with common hardware, offering strong privacy. However, users report inconsistent accuracy across watches, mic compatibility issues on newer iPhones and iOS updates, reliability concerns after updates, and some price objections. Optimal use hinges on proper wired mic placement and a quiet environment.
Pros
  • Strong accuracy improvements for many watches, helping regulation and keeping watches near correct time.
  • Works with hardware you likely already own (wired headphones/mics, Lightning dongle, Apple Earbuds), reducing the need for a dedicated timegrapher.
  • User-friendly with clear, actionable graph feedback that shows when you’re moving in the right direction.
  • Privacy-conscious with no data collection.
  • Widely praised as a valuable tool by watchmakers and enthusiasts; often described as worth the price.
Cons
  • Inconsistent/variable accuracy across different watches and setups (some readings are far off or drifting).
  • External microphone compatibility issues on newer iPhones (e.g., iPhone 15 Pro) and iOS updates, including mic not being recognized or settings reverting to internal mic.
  • Reported reliability problems after iOS updates (e.g., stopped working after iOS 18.1).
  • Perceived price/value tension, with several reviews calling it expensive or not cheap.
  • Requires careful microphone setup and environment (proper placement and wired mic usage) for best results; poor setup can lead to poor accuracy.

Not working on iPhone 15pro. Zero stars. I tried Korg external mic and Apple headset. Mic setting in app goes back to internal; doesn’t see external mic. $30 down the drain.

Better than I expected it to be. I used it with the headset it said to use, and I was able to get an accurate reading from my ST1901 which I knew was very off at about +13 s/d. I tried to use it with my Navitimer B01 and had a little trouble since it was so quiet and the signal was somewhat noisy, but it still did a decent job and gave me a good readout with very reasonable result. I’m pretty happy with my purchase as I don’t need incredible accuracy, but just want to be able to tell if my Navitimer should ever go in for service early. Thanks!

Idk what these reviews are on about but this app doesn’t work very well. Can’t seem to get anything I try to regulate to be anything close to what it says. And even if I’m a sound proof studio room I couldn’t get it to get a stable accuracy. Just constant drifting. I would give it 1 star but maybe it’s just the new iPhone mics or something that’s no longer compatible (wild guess). Spend an extra hundred on a timegrapher.
