Features & Capabilities

Piano Modoki is a lightweight, ad-free instrument that recreates a piano-like feel using FM synthesis rather than sampled sounds. It delivers piano-like timbres with fast response and a small footprint. It supports multiple temperaments, including Equal Temperament and Just Intonation, so you can explore tuning concepts beyond standard tuning.

Key features include scalable key sizes, a double-row keyboard with flip option, a metronome, transpose and pitch-frequency controls. It can connect external and virtual MIDI devices, and some DAWs support Inter-App Audio. It ships with two sounds (FM Piano-like and FM E.Piano) and can load patches to customize your tone.

User Reviews

Users praise Piano Modoki for its ad-free, simple interface, and portability, including a fast launch and a good piano tone with a full keyboard range. Core drawbacks cited across multiple reviews are mis-tuned pitches, a bug where no sound can occur on launch, and limited instrument options. Some users also desire AUv3 compatibility and more realistic/synthesized sounds beyond the two piano variants.
Pros
  • Ad-free experience
  • High-quality piano sound
  • Simple, uncluttered UI
  • Tiny file size and fast launch
  • Portable with full keyboard range for travel
Cons
  • Pitches/pitch tuning is off (A is higher/slightly out of tune)
  • Occasional no-sound bug on launch
  • Limited instrument options (only two piano variants)
  • No AUv3 support (desires for more integration)
  • Requests for richer, more realistic synthesized sounds beyond the two piano versions

the pitches are just wrong. download another piano app and see for yourself. play an A on this app vs another piano app. this piano is a half step higher than the real pitch. idk why bc it says 440 hz at the top of this app but… it’s not? it’s just wrong. i’ve been tuning all my students’ instruments to the wrong note. gah. i do like that there are no ads here, and i like that there is an option for changing the instrument followed by a note that says there is no other instrument. idk if that was supposed to be a prank but i thought it was funny and bold

It sounds sooo good. If you have KDixie- you can use those FM presets and get more synth sounds- but the actual piano sound in Modoki is top notch stuff. Again, try it with Piano Motifs or any of your favorite piano midi files/generators. It's a gem. Wish it were AUv3, but you don't really need it as the Inter -App audio (single instance) will suffice for most needs.

Why ad-free? Perhaps because he sells elaborate apps (so he’s no amateur in both music and coding), this app works as the entry for his portfolio. Modoki means alike (what a humble app name!). This is a donation to the economically challenged as well. God bless him and the world. Please download and help bring Piano Modoki up on the visibility list.
