User Reviews

Users praise Plexamp's striking design and strong integration with Plex and their own libraries, with gapless playback and other high-quality audio features noted as highlights. The app works across Windows, Mac, and iOS and offers solid curation/Radio features for discovering music from your collection. However, frequent complaints center on offline access and network-dependent usage: cannot reliably download or cache your library for offline playback, and outside-home use often requires Plex Pass. Users also report reliability issues and some UX quirks.
Pros
  • Stunning, premium-looking UI/design.
  • Strong integration with Plex and your own music library (syncing with your Plex server).
  • High-quality audio features, including gapless playback (free tier).
  • Cross-platform support across Windows, Mac, and iOS.
  • Smart radio/shuffle features for discovering music from your collection.
Cons
  • Limited offline use: no offline caching and outside-home streaming often requires Plex Pass.
  • Reliability issues: slow login/search and buffering; occasional instability with server connectivity.
  • UI/UX quirks and annoyances (confusing option labels, loop behavior not remembered, platform quirks such as OSX mouse wheel).
  • Some features are gated behind a paid plan (e.g., Sonic AI).

Plexamp really takes all the benefits of selfhosting your music library and adds on all the benefits we’ve all come accustomed to with streaming, and then some! The UI is great and intuitive, the mixes (while sadly locked behind a plex pass) are the best no-setup auto playlists out there. The settings let you customize everything to be exactly how you want it. The headless player / Caldera works better than Sonos and integrates with Music Assistant. My only remaining qualm is that there isn’t an easy way to have shared playlists with your family or friends that you share your library with. While I made a basic workaround with python, it’d be great if it were a regular feature supported by the app / Plex ecosystem

I purchased the app with the promise I’d only have to it once and never worry about it again - then they forced me to update to a different app and discontinued the one I paid for. Now they want me to buy a plex pass instead They also constantly change things and it’s just terrible
