Features & Capabilities

Spatial Vis is a training tool for engineering, pre-engineering, and other science and technology students. The app teaches freehand sketching of 2D and 3D views, which is an important skill for technical communication and improving one's ability to visualize shapes in 3D. These skills have been shown to increase GPAs and graduation rates in STEM.

Spatial Vis has 10 unique lessons that include orthographic projections, rotations of 3D objects, and flat patterns. Students complete assignments by sketching their solution and submitting their sketch to be automatically graded. Students have access to hints if they get stuck, but Spatial Vis is gamified to encourage students to try on their own before using the help features.

Spatial Vis is designed for students enrolled in a course at a participating institution. Instructors and students not at participating institutions may work on assignments and review the course material through the Not For Course Credit mode.

User Reviews

Spatial Vis is a learning tool that helps visualize STEM concepts in 2D/3D and is used in classrooms, with recent updates adding zoom, a straight-line tool, and hints. However, users frequently report usability problems: no palm rejection, a clunky eraser, precision challenges when drawing with a finger, lag and startup delays, and occasional reliability issues with server capacity and line recognition. The app is praised for its educational value and improvements, but these drawbacks hinder consistent use for some students and teachers.
Pros
  • Helps visualize 2D/3D concepts, aiding STEM learning
  • Helpful in classroom settings; teachers assign/use it
  • Recent updates add useful features (zoom, straight-line tool) and hints that improve drawing and problem solving
Cons
  • Lacks palm rejection, making touch drawing frustrating and imprecise
  • Eraser is clunky, with no convenient 'erase all' option
  • Drawing with a finger is too imprecise and the app is overly picky about line placement (grid/snap)
  • Performance issues: long startup times and lag; server capacity problems, especially on weekends
  • Some drawing/line recognition features are unreliable (hidden lines not working, lines must align with grid)

I do believe this is a great tool as a student but the app is really frustrating to utilize sometimes. No palm rejection, no “erase all” feature, the eraser is just so clunky overall…
