Features & Capabilities

Mononoke is an unconventional synthesizer designed to compose evolving soundscapes and musical textures. Its voices in each section can be routed back into each other to create overtones and pulsating resonant frequencies, ranging from harmonic to atonal textures.

The two independent engines deliver a large FM-like system where each voice acts as an operator; together they shape a single, cohesive soundscape. The 8 on-screen performance pads offer multi-dimensional modulation and, when used as an AU plugin, output MPE/MIDI for recording and tweaking sessions. Mononoke also offers a basic standalone mode for jamming and preset creation, plus Mononoke Pads, a separate AUv3 MIDI controller plugin for playing MPE-compatible synths.

User Reviews

Mononoke is praised for rich, evolving drone sounds and an expressive, pad-driven UI. Reviewers highlight its strong MPE support, playability, and solid AUv3/host integration, plus good value. However, stability and compatibility issues on certain devices/hosts temper enthusiasm, and several note it isn’t a traditional synth but a specialized instrument with a unique workflow.
Pros
  • Rich, expressive sounds with a visually engaging interface.
  • Highly playable touch experience with expressive pads and MPE support.
  • Unique drone/ambient instrument with evolving textures.
  • Excellent AUv3/host integration (works well with AUM, Cubasis, Logic).
  • Good value for the price.
Cons
  • Stability issues on some devices, including crashes and audio dropouts.
  • Compatibility/host integration problems (IAA and AU visibility in GarageBand, iPad not appearing).
  • Not a traditional synth; a specialized instrument with limited general-purpose use.

Mononoke is fun and easy to use. Sounds great. Looks great. It could be mistaken for a toy but it's not. Normally you'd use this as AUv3 in something like Cubasis, GarageBand, Logic, AUM, et cetera (I recommend AUM because it's so fast and easy to work in). Mononoke does not have a record function in standalone, so if you want to capture an impromptu performance record the screen (then separate the audio and video in something like LumaFusion if you just want sound). The best control and most fun is in using the built-in keyboard. Play around with it and you'll quickly see why.

This is one of my favorite iOS synths. Absolutely incredible sounds, and a great interface for expressions. Kudos to the devs. I adore Mononoke.
