User Reviews

Coat Color is easy to use and helpful for predicting puppy coat colors from dam–sire inputs and for learning color genetics, and is popular among breeders. However, users report reliability problems with predicted phenotypes, some genetic markers are missing or misreported, and the wording can be confusing. The app also seems to be tailored toward French Bulldog genetics, limiting its usefulness across other breeds.
Pros
  • Easy to use and beginner-friendly interface.
  • Helps predict coat color outcomes by entering dam and sire genetics, aiding breeding planning.
  • Saves time and reduces the learning curve for color possibilities.
  • Valuable for breeders testing possibilities and learning color genetics.
Cons
  • Reliability/accuracy issues in phenotype predictions; results can be incorrect or misleading (e.g., Merle appearing when not carried).
  • Bugs or gaps in genetics markers (e.g., brindle Kb) leading to wrong results.
  • Wording and UI can be confusing about how to input carrier status and genetics.
  • Breed limitations; the app appears focused on French Bulldog genetics, limiting broader breed use.

As a Goldendoodle breeder, I was super excited to find this app to predict puppy colors with specific sire and dam pairings. The inverse wording of “do not enter a gene if you want it to be considered a carrier” was so very confusing. Then having almost every color on the list of phenotype coming out at 100% did not make sense. Neither my sire nor dam carry Merle genes, so I inputted Merle, and based on the app’s wording, the puppies should not be Merle. The phenotype came out with 100% Merle. I think this app would be much better if we could input the genes that our dogs DO carry, combine and then execute the proper color combinations.
