BlackHolesHD offers a visually striking, realistic-feeling look at gravitational lensing with interactive rotation and a galaxy backdrop. Since this is a free tech demo, once cannot expect it to be packed with numerous features, so I’m simply reviewing it on what it is… The app does a fairly good job at simulating the gravitational lensing effect of a blackhole, by letting the user drag to rotate. That said, the effect is fairly glitchy, often having stray lines that break the fluidity effect. It’s also not possible to rotate the simulation beyond the poles of the blackhole, leading to jittery rotational glitching. The rotation of the accretion disk looks good, but it doesn’t account for the gravitation effects on the brightness of the glowing differing by the direction of rotation. It would also be nice to allow the user to scale the blackhole to see the lensing effect across more of the screen.
