Notes, Tasks, Markdown, Files

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Notebooks is a perpetual-license writing and organization app that stores documents as standard files, so you can export, move, and access them anytime without subscriptions or vendor lock-in.

It offers flexible writing modes—WYSIWYG formatting, plain text with a focused view, and Markdown with syntax highlighting—plus powerful organization: books and nested hierarchies, full-text search, and backlinking. Create tasks from documents, link related notes with wiki-style links, and sync across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and PC. Your data stays yours and durable with OCR, cross-device access, and long-term stability.

User Reviews

Notebooks is a mature, feature-rich notebook for Apple users that excels at deep organization and ecosystem integration, with a one-time purchase and good data portability. The main trade-offs are intermittent syncing issues across devices and some formatting/Markdown quirks. Despite these, reviewers praise reliability, responsive support, and strong cross-device workflow. It’s a solid choice for those wanting a powerful, non-subscription notebook that works well with iCloud and Markdown exports.
Pros
  • Robust cross-device sync via iCloud and strong Apple ecosystem integration (Mac and iPhone).
  • Flexible, deep organization with folders/notebooks, nested structure, sorting, and undo.
  • One-time purchase with no subscription and good data portability (Markdown/HTML exports; works with Dropbox).
  • Responsive developer and dependable customer support.
  • Long-standing, trusted app with years of use and proven reliability.
Cons
  • Sync reliability across versions and devices can be intermittent, with timeouts and cross-version syncing challenges.
  • Formatting/Markdown handling quirks and UI inconsistencies (bold/italic behavior affecting markers, indentation limitations, and overall formatting UX).

A notebook engine wrapped around giant storage that allows each file to maintain its original file format. Easy to keep in notes and easy to share with no proprietary notebook behavior. Tasks! One line or an entire notebook can be turned into a tasks and a check box for a to-do list so it's also a to-do list engine interconnected to the storage files and the words in the notebooks. This is not your normal notebook app! Brilliant design. I love it and it synchronizes with all my devices including Mac. The developer is also incredibly kind, intelligent and attentive. Connected to family account, buy it once and share with the family. Huge value for the money. Highly recommend! 👏🏽💝🌹

I can’t swipe my document to another document, and I can’t make side-by-side documents either. I couldn’t even swipe document in side-by-side before as well. I am dissatisfied.
