The YouBike system itself is widely praised for nationwide coverage, reliable bikes, and fair pricing. However, the app is hampered by onboarding and login friction (SMS verification, session timeouts) and a Taiwan-number requirement for foreigners. EasyCard compatibility is lacking, language options are limited, and peak-time performance can be poor due to slow scans or failures. Overall, the core service is solid, but onboarding and localization issues deter broader use.

Pros

The YouBike system itself is solid: nationwide coverage, bikes work well, and pricing is reasonable.
For foreigners, after completing onboarding steps (Single Rental, email verification, adding a credit card), the app becomes usable and works fine.
The overall YouBike ecosystem is trusted and widely regarded as awesome by users.

Cons

Sign-up/login issues: SMS verification failures, automatic session timeouts, and password/data validation errors.
Taiwan phone number requirement makes sign-up unfriendly or impossible for travelers using international SIMs.
EasyCard is not accepted or fails to register, blocking rentals for some users.
Language and localization problems: no in-app language switch or Chinese localization available for some versions.
Performance issues at busy times: long wait times to scan, occasional failures during peak hours.

Recent reviews

Can’t even find the button that allows none Taiwanese people to sign up. Which is hidden in tiny 1 time use. Then it puts you in a sign up loop that says scan QR code but there’s no way to do that, so you can only hit back button, then it resets the sign up. No other options or directions. The whole UX department should be fired or which ever engineer built this app. Totally ruined my first morning in Taipei.
