Features & Capabilities

Library Notes is a free, open-source iOS app for taking notes about the books you read. There’s no service, no accounts, no passwords. You always own your data.

If you are a book lover, your reading log and the notes you take about the books you read are one of the most important things you create in your life. Your notes help books become a part of you. Inspired by Commonplace Books, Library Notes is an iPad and iPhone app designed specifically for book notes.

To help you remember your book notes, Library Notes has “review mode.” Review mode scans your notes for quotes, prompt questions, and fill-in-the-blank questions. It prompts you with this material to make sure you constantly refresh your memory with all of the great things you’ve been capturing.

You are what you read!

User Reviews

Simple and efficient. Tho I wish there were ways to create tags like Goodreads, preset other rating options like spice, character likeability, etc.

I tried Library Notes early last year and I fell in love with its simplicity and abundance of features. I have tried other paid options before, but they are way too limited in what they offer for free (I think the book limit is less than 20). What I would like to see added is an import feature for book collections. There is an app called Libby that lets you export all books read or unread as a CSV file or json file. Being able to import these into Library Notes, and take notes would make my reading experience that much more fruitful. I listen to audiobooks from Libby and it would be nice for the app to recognize audiobooks and playtimes. Anyway, I love the app nonetheless and the developer is great.

I do a lot of reading but sometimes it feels like it is going into a black hole. I think the review features in Library Notes may be the missing piece for me. I use Kindle highlights to save passages from books and Pocket to save articles. But once filed away, I only see them again if I go hunting. Library Notes has quick flashcards style reviews of quotes and the ability to make cloze deletions. This is a huge help in actually moving what I have read into longterm memory. I highly recommend this app.
