User Reviews

Hammer is highly valued by truck drivers for its truck-specific routing that avoids restricted roads and low bridges, making trips safer and more affordable. It is praised for reliability, ease of use, and being competitive with other maps. However, recurring glitches and rerouting issues, plus the paid subscription cost, are common criticisms. Some users also rely on Hammer in combination with other mapping apps. Overall, strong value with caveats.
Pros
  • Truck-specific routing avoids restricted roads, low bridges, and weight limits.
  • Reliable and useful for daily trucking; gets the job done.
  • Easy to use interface.
  • Better than competing truck maps (perceived value; worth the subscription).
Cons
  • Frequent glitches and unreliable rerouting (map spins, wrong prompts, unwanted U-turns).
  • Paid subscription can be expensive; some users question value.
  • Reliability concerns lead some drivers to use Hammer alongside other maps.

This app made it possible for me to safely and affordably navigate a UHAUL box truck from Southern New England to the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Small stuff for real truckers but indispensable for me. Before the app I simply knew that “trucks were not allowed on several parkways” leading to the city…..the very roads offered by Google Maps and driven many times. Hammer GPS filled the knowledge gap. The only points for improvement would be a way to step through the road transitions step by step like Google Maps and to include the route numbers alongside the local names for highway segments. The local names are useful since they may be the only use tier on a real sign but interstate numbers make it easy to connect to the bigger picture. Example the Hutchinson River EXPRESSWAY (I678) is ok for trucks while the Hutchinson River Parkway, trucks banned, doesn’t have a distinct number but is a seamless continuation of CT route 15. Having I678 AND Hutchinson River Expressway make the truck safe segment of “The Hutchinson” clear.
