Features & Capabilities

From Brigitta Rena, the creator of A Raven Monologue and She & The Light Bearer, When The Past Was Around is an adventure point-and-click puzzle game about love, moving on, letting go, and the joys and pains in between. It tells the story of Eda, a girl in her early 20s who’s lost on the path to her dreams and love, until she meets The Owl—the man who will help her burn her passion, spark a relationship, and learn heartbreak—in a surreal world of memories and time.

The game lets the visuals lead the way: hand-drawn art that speaks beyond words, a short, whimsical journey through disjointed rooms of memories. Players solve brain-teasing puzzles, gather clues, and unlock doors, uncovering secrets about the past and about herself. A lyrical violin score carries you through peaceful days to angst-filled moments, making the experience personal and universal.

User Reviews

The game is visually stunning and emotionally powerful, with engaging puzzles and a tightly paced story that many players find memorable. Most praise the art, music, and mood, and note strong replay value. However, the title is not free: after an initial portion, you must pay to proceed, and several reviews lament the paywall and unclear pricing. A recurring frustration is the inability to save progress, causing potential replay. There are occasional bugs mentioned but they don’t define the core experience.
Pros
  • Beautiful art style and animation with a calming soundtrack
  • Emotional, heart-wrenching story that sticks with you
  • Engaging point-and-click puzzles that are fun and accessible
  • Short, well-paced experience with meaningful moments
  • Memorable Owl character and strong mood with good replay value
Cons
  • Requires payment to access the full game; pricing not clearly disclosed and many reviewers feel it should be free
  • No save feature; progress cannot be saved and you must start over
  • Occasional bugs or broken features (e.g., piano code not triggering, help feature not working)
  • Some players feel it isn't worth paying or would prefer a free option

10/10 Beautiful art and design. Clever puzzles that stumped me but weren’t unachievable. Just took a bit of messing around. Did I say it was beautiful? I’m so curious about the story behind it. Also a demo but one that is worthwhile

I absolutely love how it started it was fun, entertaining and no too hard but not too easy. The animation is great and i love how it was all moving. Until i got to where you have to pay,and honesty I would pay but im a broke teen who’s parent do not spend their money on online games so I couldn’t pay too keep paying which honestly got me sad. It’s a great game as to where i got but i just can’t pay
