User Reviews

Overall, users praise OALD as an excellent, indispensable dictionary with well-organized content and strong cross-device use. However, recurring complaints center on licensing/ownership changes (perpetual licenses removed, older editions delisted), trouble restoring purchases and transferring licenses, high subscription costs without a one-time option, reliability issues after updates, and gaps like the missing Mac version. These themes dominate the discussion alongside continued loyalty from long-time users.
Pros
  • High-quality, comprehensive dictionary that many learners find indispensable.
  • Positive user experience and well-organized content that supports effective learning.
  • Cross-device usability, including strong mentions of Mac compatibility alongside iPad usage.
  • Longevity and loyalty signals from long-time users who rely on the app for years.
  • Overall reputation of the app as one of the best dictionary tools for English learners.
Cons
  • Forced upgrade from a perpetual license (OALD 9) to a subscription, with delisting of older editions and loss of prior purchases.
  • Repeated issues restoring purchases or transferring licenses across devices, including disabled restore options and sign-in problems.
  • High subscription costs and lack of a one-time purchase or physical-copy option, leading to concerns about value and ownership.
  • Reliability and compatibility problems after updates, including crashes, slow performance, and partial OS compatibility (e.g., iOS updates).
  • Lack of a Mac version or limited cross-platform support beyond iOS, plus requests for better platform parity.

After I changed my ipad, version 9 could not be transferred to my new iPad, so had to subscribe version 10, though don’t like it as much as version 9. I subscribed for one year, to give a try. Now it looks like has expired. So I need to do new subscription. I feel very uncomfortable that the publisher has pushed us to accept an inferior product.
