Features & Capabilities

Tone Generator EX is a compact audio tool that generates tones across a wide frequency range (15 Hz to 22 kHz) using four classic waveforms: Sine, Square, Sawtooth, and Triangle. It supports background playback and convenient controls from the notification area or headset buttons, plus an auto-off timer for power management.

Users can create and save their own presets, tune frequencies by musical notes, and enjoy auto-pause on incoming calls or alarms. This extension is ideal for sound testing, music/app development, and educational demonstrations.

User Reviews

Tone Generator EX is praised as a free, ad-free, accurate sine-wave generator with a clean, responsive interface. It’s valued for tuning, calibration, and musical reference, and for precise frequency entry and a built-in keyboard. Top cons focus on its outdated status, limited low-frequency range, and absence of export/sweep saving and DAW plugin support.
Pros
  • Free and ad-free; no nag screens or subscriptions
  • Accurate sine-wave tones suitable for calibration and tuning
  • Clean, intuitive UI that feels responsive and musically oriented
  • Precise frequency entry with decimal support (two decimals)
  • Built-in keyboard to hear notes and view exact frequencies
Cons
  • Outdated/not updated recently; potential compatibility risks with newer iPadOS
  • Low end frequency limit (~15 Hz); users request lower ranges (down to 10 Hz or 0–12 Hz)
  • Lacks export/save of created tones and sweeps and missing DAW plugin support (no VST3/AUv3)

How can we adjust for .4-12 hertz ? That’s would be so cool if there was an up date

I’m a musician, and this app has become one of my go-to tools. It’s not just another tone generator — it’s actually useful. The built-in keyboard that lets you hear each note and see its exact frequency is brilliant. It’s perfect for composing, tuning, referencing pitches, and reaching that low-end response — everything just works the way it should. Most tone apps feel like technical utilities. This one feels musical. The layout is clean, intuitive, and it reacts instantly. Whoever designed it clearly understands how musicians think and work. I have a request however door the developer. No, it’s a plea. If the frequency range could be extended to 10hz and I’d love to see a VST3 / AUv3 / desktop plugin version of this. It’d be a perfect addition to any DAW — not just for testing tones. This app is accurate, reliable, and free — easily the best tone generator I’ve found on mobile. Don’t change the formula; just give it a plugin version and it’s perfect. Please oh please.

It does what it says and it does it just fine. I use it with pair of bone conductor speakers and I can feel the vibration on my skin. The timer feature is great too. Thanks for this app and keeping it free.
