Features & Capabilities

Timers on Apple Watch lets you set and start multiple timers with ease. Choose preselected presets, recents, or create custom timers, and quickly access your most-used timers from Recents. Swipe on a recent duration to save it as a favorite.

Stay informed with the remaining time shown on the Siri Watch Face and watch complications, and use Siri to start timers with custom labels such as Start a 20 minute Crispy Bacon timer.

User Reviews

Many users value quick access to preset/default timers and the ability to use common presets (like 5/15 minutes). The major pain points center on the update placing recents above presets, duplicating stock timers in recents, and cluttering the UI, which makes finding and selecting presets harder. A subset of users also notes readability issues from the layout change and the challenges of clearing long recents lists. Overall, there is a strong call to revert to the old preset-at-top layout.
Pros
  • Presets/default timers are quick to access and highly valued when placed at the top of the timer screen.
  • Frequent use of common presets (e.g., 5 and 15 minutes) for everyday timing is supported and appreciated.
  • The timer app remains a useful quick-access tool on the Apple Watch for timing various tasks.
Cons
  • Recents are shown at the top, pushing presets down, which requires more scrolling and makes it harder to quickly select the desired timer.
  • Recents now include the default presets, creating duplicates and clutter and causing custom timers to be harder to access.
  • The timer view’s redesign moves secondary information into a more prominent spot, reducing readability and quick usability.
  • Long lists of recent timers can become unwieldy and are reported as hard to clear (sometimes requiring deletion/reinstallation).

Like others, I use the default times quite frequently and liked having them at the “top” of the timer screen. Custom and recents are not used as often. Wish I could switch it back the way it was before the update.

Along with fitness and notifications, the Timer is close to being the killer app for the Apple Watch. The current version is much less usable than previous. With the recent timers at the top, I essentially always have to scroll to find the time I want. And with each recent entry being a full-width button, the preset values are even farther away. And since I’m scrolling, the targets for the presets are never in a predictable place on the screen making it even fiddlier to select the one I want. The reset and pause buttons right in the corners on the running timer view are kind of nice for being able to find them without looking. Though I sometimes accidentally pause a timer without noticing and that’s not great. Besides fixing the regression above, to make the app truly great you would let me control what the default timer values are (my kingdom for a 20 minutes default!)

The latest update moved custom times to the top…ugh. I need the standard timers on top.
