I could never pay with this. Ended up using credit cards. The system constantly crashed when trying to pay.

The promptpay has to be topped up with foreign currency at the kbank exchange booth, not just any branch. The airport location has a terrible markup and the city locations are slightly better. After you top up and try to actually pay, it takes at least 30s to get from opening the app to actually paying because of all the loading. You pay extra for the inconvenience, might as well just use cash.
