Detention is such a good game absolutely worth every second. From start to finish, it pulls you into a world that’s both deeply unsettling and stunningly crafted. The atmosphere is thick with tension and melancholy, creating a constant sense of unease that perfectly complements the story. What really stood out to me was the art direction. The backgrounds are hauntingly beautiful, almost like walking through a series of eerie, living paintings. This game was insane and I mean that in a good way. Like I am in absolute awe. The graphics? Beautiful. Story? Amazing. Characters? Heart wrenching and real. Length? Perfect— could have played it even longer. I really loved the old Taiwanese architecture used throughout the game and how the whole main storyline is based on the real events of a 1947 high school during the Taiwanese White Terror. I am an American and I try to learn as much as I can about other cultures since a lot of history and cultures are left out of the American education system. I knew Taiwan had been through a lot on its journey to independence and being the human rights haven it is today, but I had no idea the extent it went to. My eyes were opened by this game to something I had remained ignorant to until now. More games like this should exist. It’s a beautiful way of making people truly immerse themselves into history to understand what people experienced during that time period and learn about another culture. I highly recommend this game and can’t wait to go download RedCandle’s other game “Devotion” (it cannot be bought anywhere except their website now due to political controversy and banning issues). My only warning is that this game will throw you through an emotional roller coaster, so be prepared to go from spooked in the beginning to on the verge of tears by the end. I finished this game during my lunch break in public and I’m not the type to cry in front of people, but you best believe I was struggling not to after I finished playing.
