Minimal Pairs/Final Consonants

Speech Therapy Activities

Features & Capabilities

This Chrome extension is developed by an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist to address final consonant perception and production. It uses 80 minimal word pairs whose members are differentiated by the presence or absence of a final consonant. Through flashcards and game play, learners discover how final consonants can change meaning (e.g., tire vs tired, bee vs bean, ray vs rain), supporting accurate word understanding and production.

Pairs can be selected by phonological group or customized by choosing individual items for targeted practice. Phonological groups included are: Final t and d, final k and g, final p and b, final f and v, final s and z, final th, final ch and j, final m, final n, and final l and r.

User Reviews

I use this all the time with my young clients with final consonant reduction. Lots of pairs. Well organized. Kids really like the game.

The pictures and audio are great, but I would be hesitant to use this app in therapy because the client will know what they got right/wrong. Would be much improved if it didn’t show the check and x marks - or if they could be turned off and on. Also, you should be able to stop at any point. Meaning, if you choose all the minimal pair options, you should be able to stop midway through and still receive a percent accuracy and a list of those which were right and wrong. Lastly, you should be able to create different profiles for different clients.
