Pointsman

Pointsman is a Chrome extension that automatically scores Ticket to Ride using your iPhone camera. It tallies each player’s routes, scores, station bonuses, longest trains, and destination tickets, then presents everything on a beautiful, shareable score ticket. The app is 100% free with absolutely no ads, and you can tip if you enjoy it. It uses ARKit and CoreML to recognize trains on the board, with compatibility for multiple editions including USA, USA 1910 Expansion, Europe, Europa 1912 Expansion, Rails & Sails, and the Great Lakes. A future update will bring Rails and Sails, The World.

For best results, stand in front of the board and hold your device at about a 45-degree angle. You can verify accuracy with simple checks on the score ticket or use the built-in edit mode to fix mistakes. A demo version at http://chimerasw.com/pointsman/ lets you try the tool even without a finished game. Pointsman is not affiliated with Days of Wonder or Ticket to Ride; it’s a fan-made helper to make counting trains less tedious.

User Reviews

Pointsman is praised for fast, camera-based scoring and an easy UI, making it a fun and efficient way to tally scores. However, multiple reviews point to recurring accuracy issues (color/token reads, route/goal misreads), problematic manual editing (blank tabs), and occasional mis-scoring of longest routes or expansions. Lighting conditions also affect performance. Overall, it’s a strong concept with solid use in good lighting, but reliability and editing tools need refinement to meet consistent expectations.
Pros
  • Fast, camera-based scoring that saves time compared to manual counting.
  • Easy-to-use UI with simple manual corrections when scans are off.
  • Innovative concept that many users find magical or impressive.
  • Generally reliable performance across boards when lighting is good.
Cons
  • Scans are not consistently accurate: colors, tokens, and route cards are frequently misread.
  • Manual edit feature is frequently broken or blank (tabs/fields unavailable), making fixes difficult.
  • Longest route scoring is often incorrect, with other route scores also off.
  • The app struggles to distinguish between game versions/expansions, leading to wrong bonuses.
  • Performance depends on lighting; dim or overly bright lighting can degrade color recognition.

Works great. Only wish I knew how to edit tickets/destinations

Great app!! My only comment is that on newer printings of Ticket to Ride, the game tokens have been made translucent. On occasion the app has trouble discerning that the blue tokens on top of a yellow, or green route are not in fact green tokens.

Love the concept and it has worked flawlessly in the past, but just tonight noticed an incorrect scan of a route card. Tried it multiple times and still fails. In this particular instance, I was trying to scan “San Francisco to Atlanta” (17 pts) but it always scanned as “Los Angeles to Oklahoma City” (9 pts). Tried multiple times, same result. I’ve suggested this apps to friend and now I’m embarrassed to tell them that it doesn’t always work, sorry.
