Features & Capabilities

The Devil's Calculator is a math puzzle game that has been praised as one of the PAX 10 best indie games. It is open-source, nonprofit, and designed to educate as well as entertain, with new levels contributed by famous mathematicians such as Alex Bellos and James Grime. Players reverse-engineer obscured arithmetic functions to purge the demon from the evil calculator, using logic and algebra to interpolate the operators and advance.

The game features hand-drawn artwork, a charming story, and depth through advanced graphing mechanics and a level-editor that lets users create and share challenges. The first 20+ levels are free, with additional DLC levels crafted by educators and mathematicians like Bellos, Grant Sanderson, Tony Padilla, and James Tanton. The title has been celebrated at events like the MOVES conference by the National Museum of Mathematics and was recognized by GDWC and PAX for its innovation and educational value.

Unlike most attempts, which can more accurately be described as “educational” game or educational “game”. I’m genuinely having fun while also brushing up on my math and logic. Who knew the number 666 could provide such a wide variety of puzzles. Update: knocking off a star because some of the late puzzles with the third operator get too tedious with too much trial and error
