The app has a long history of convincing people that their voice is feminine when it is not. Voice gender is obviously not determined by pitch, yet the app has repeatedly reinforced that misconception among trans women who are practicing voice training. People generally do not perceive a voice as male or female based solely on pitch; machines and algorithms are far more likely to rely on pitch-based measurements. In a recent update, however, the developer appears to have doubled down on this confusion by lowering the “female pitch” threshold even further. As a result, the app has become even less reliable as an indicator of how voice-classification algorithms would categorize a voice. It’s a pretty hilarious update.
