IPA Phonetic Keyboard

Simple & convenient IPA input

Features & Capabilities

The IPA Phonetic Keyboard is a lightweight, completely free IPA input tool designed as a Chrome extension for linguists, language learners, and hobbyists. It includes all symbols from the latest IPA chart (2020 version) and most extIPA symbols (2016 version). The symbols are organized into natural sections—consonants, vowels, diacritics, suprasegmentals, tones, word accents, and more—mirroring the IPA chart for fast symbol lookup.

The layout is designed for quick access, with a top row for brackets and common markers such as [], //, ~, ◌, as well as space and return. Best of all, it is entirely free with no ads, making it ideal for linguistics study, language learning, and related exploration.

User Reviews

Users largely praise the app for being free, ad-free, and rich in IPA symbols, making phonetic transcription and conlang work easier. The main recurring drawbacks are paywalls for legacy/obsolete symbols, gaps in symbol coverage, and concerns about the price for additional content. Overall, it’s a useful tool with some monetization frictions and requests for broader symbol support.
Pros
  • Free to use and ad-free, with no subscription required.
  • Comprehensive IPA/extIPA symbol set and diacritics for phonetics and conlangs.
  • Very convenient and faster than copying/pasting from online IPA keyboards.
  • Helpful for showing exact pronunciation and transcription.
Cons
  • Legacy/obsolete symbols and other advanced symbols are behind a paywall.
  • Missing or not yet included symbols (e.g., some IPA, ExtIPA, diacritics) and feature gaps; requests for more coverage.
  • Price concerns for extra content/symbols.

i love phonetics i'm so glad i can have a phonetic keyboard, 5 stars it's exactly what it says it is and it's free

It’s 5 stars for everything until nonstandard and obsolete symbols. The two last symbols in community requested shouldn’t be able to be in a keyboard that says “for age 4+”. At least put an age limit on it, disgusting.
