Features & Capabilities

Dark Reader for Safari brings dark mode to every website by generating on-the-fly dark themes. It inverts bright colors to deliver high-contrast text that’s easier on the eyes, and it integrates with your system’s dark mode for a seamless browsing experience.

Customize brightness and contrast, apply a sepia tone, or choose from color presets. You can enable or disable Dark Reader per site, auto-synchronize with system dark mode, or let it detect sites that are already dark. The extension is ad-free and does not collect user data, and a single purchase includes macOS Safari access through the same iCloud account. For best results, enable Dark Reader in Safari preferences and disable conflicting extensions.

User Reviews

Users broadly praise Dark Reader for Safari for reducing eye strain and automatically darkening most sites, with strong customization and per-site control. Many view it as worth the price and valuable across platforms. However, recurring concerns center on Safari-specific performance issues (crashes/lag), inconsistent site rendering on Safari (including charts), and occasional bugs after updates that disrupt website behavior.
Pros
  • Significant eye strain relief and improved readability across most websites.
  • Automatically applies dark mode across sites, reducing need to hunt for toggles.
  • Rich customization options, including contrast controls, dark-theme detection, and per-site exceptions.
  • Per-site control to disable or override on specific sites when needed.
  • Widely praised and considered worth the price by many users.
Cons
  • Safari-specific performance issues: crashes on iPhone/macOS and noticeable browsing slowdowns.
  • Inconsistent site compatibility on Safari: some sites don’t darken properly or render incorrectly (e.g., charts, heavy pages).
  • Updates can introduce bugs that disrupt site rendering or behavior (e.g., Google sites freezing, YouTube tab issues).

Noir was what I started using with Safari on iOS but there are websites it doesn’t work on. Since Firefox with Dark Reader is my primary configuration on desktop computers, it made sense to try their iOS app. I found that most of the websites that don’t work in Noir work in Dark Reader, and most of the sites that don’t work in Dark Reader work in Noir, so instead of switching I now have Dark Reader turned on by default and Noir turned off by default, and when I encounter a website that doesn’t darken, I switch by making an exception for it in both extensions. Ideally one would be able to handle every website but nothing is ever that simple. Very few websites slip through both, so I’m pretty content with the setup.

This software was well worth the price. I have not had any problems with this software working with the Safari Browser. There are many setting if you want to adjust the Dark Mode. I love the default setting: “Detect Dark Theme. Site’s Theme Will Not Be Overridden.” This setting can be changed also. I Highly Recommend Dark Reader for Safari.
