User Reviews

KB-1 Keyboard Suite is praised for its MPE-enabled, expressive control and broad DAW compatibility, including Ableton, AUM, BeatMaker 3, and Korg Gadget, plus a built-in six-octave on-screen keyboard that’s ideal for travel. Reviewers also appreciate its travel-friendly design and the ability to work as a standalone or AUv3 controller. However, several cite stability and compatibility problems across hosts (crashes, black screens, no sound in some apps), inconsistent scale mappings, and a lack of documentation. With improvements in polish, scale accuracy, and guidance, it could live up to its potential.
Pros
  • MPE-enabled with Roli-style expressive control and slide gestures.
  • Broad DAW/AUv3/standalone compatibility (Ableton, AUM, BeatMaker 3, Korg Gadget) for flexible workflows.
  • Built-in on-screen six-octave keyboard for portable note input.
  • Travel-friendly design that reduces gear when working on the road.
Cons
  • Stability issues: crashes, freezes, and black screens across AUM, Logic, Cubasis, and standalone.
  • Incorrect scales/mapping: major/minor scale mismatches and mislabelled scales.
  • Inconsistent host compatibility: some apps (e.g., Cubasis) produce no sound or fail to recognize KB-1 as an AUv3 host.
  • Lack of documentation/tutorials; steep learning curve.

The interface is cramped. I wish you could hide everything but the keys and drum pads to make more space. There’s an odd visual glitch where the drop shadow of each key permanently disappears as you play them. Also, I wish you could set it to default to an output so you don’t have to select it for each controller every time. It’s lacking a lot of polish for such an expensive app. I don’t know how this got so highly rated in its current condition.

Can’t use this to have my 6 year old practice piano on my iPad while traveling. No audio output.

It just doesn’t seem to work. Using it in AUM it won’t do anything and then it crashes. In stand alone it won’t connect to any other apps. I was excited for this keyboard and it’s a bummer it’s broken.
