User Reviews

Colorado Trail Explorer is praised for official CO trail data, real-time closures, free offline maps, and versatile routing across activities. However, users frequently cite outdated or incomplete trail data, password/login issues, and suboptimal map interactions. Additional frustration centers on no Apple Watch support and no CarPlay/Android Auto integration. Overall, it’s a strong, free CO-focused tool that could be greatly improved with data freshness, smoother UX, and wearables/car integrations.
Pros
  • Official Colorado trails data with real-time trail closures and updates sourced directly from the authorities.
  • Free app with no subscription, offering a strong alternative to paid trail apps.
  • Offline maps capability (download topo maps) for use without cell service.
  • Robust route planning and trail-network features, including building custom routes and snapping to existing trails.
  • Broad, multi-agency data with official links and elevation info that supports hiking, off-roading, and mountain biking.
Cons
  • Trail data freshness and accuracy issues: trails can be missing, closures outdated, and seasonal closures not reliably updated.
  • Password/account login problems: password reset often doesn’t work and account creation can be problematic.
  • Poor map interaction/UX: lack of one-handed zoom, reliance on two-handed pinch, and overall difficult navigation.
  • Lack of Apple Watch support for quick glances on wearables.
  • Lack of CarPlay/Android Auto integration for in-vehicle navigation and hands-free use.

Really useful app and in many ways superior to AllTrails. One thing I find curious though is there are many trails that seem to be missing. For instance, the trail to the top of South Arapahoe Peak isn’t here. The keyhole route up Longs Peak is likewise MIA. Not sure why the omissions, but I love the app otherwise.
