User Reviews

Onkyo HF Player is praised for its excellent sound quality and strong support for high‑resolution audio, making it a favorable choice for audiophiles on iOS. Longtime users view it as a solid, worthwhile app with decent performance. However, multiple reviews note consistent downsides: weak integration with Apple’s ecosystem (Apple Music/iTunes and Siri), language barriers due to Japanese-only instructions, stability/compatibility issues across devices and OS versions, and missing features like MQA defolding and auto playlists along with limited updates and support. These trade-offs shape an overall strong yet imperfect experience.
Pros
  • Excellent sound quality, especially with high-resolution formats like HD FLAC and other uncompressed files.
  • Long-standing positive user experience, with many users considering it a solid audiophile alternative on iOS.
  • App is appreciated by the audiophile community as a viable high-end audio player for iOS.
  • Overall strong performance that appeals to users seeking audiophile-grade playback.
Cons
  • Poor integration with Apple ecosystem (Apple Music/iTunes, Siri) and confusion due to Apple Music defaults.
  • Japanese-only instructions and support creating language barriers for many users.
  • Stability and compatibility issues across devices/OS versions (e.g., iPhone 12 mini issues, iOS 18 DSD DoP problems).
  • Missing features and slow or no updates (no auto playlists, lack of MQA defolding support, limited updates).
  • Support and documentation problems (support link pointing to a sales page, limited official help).
