Features & Capabilities

GlobalProtect for iOS delivers secure, enterprise-grade VPN access by connecting to Palo Alto Networks gateways. It automatically discovers the best gateway, supports Always-On VPN, Remote Access VPN, and App VPN, and adapts to the end user’s location to deliver optimal performance with minimal effort.

Key features include On-Demand VPN, BYOD support, MDM provisioning, and multiple authentication methods (RADIUS, SAML, LDAP, client certificates). It requires PAN-OS gateways (7.1+), iOS 10+, and a GlobalProtect gateway subscription.

User Reviews

Users report frequent reliability and authentication problems on Apple devices. Core issues include unstable connections requiring reinstall or many retries, repeated sign-in and MFA failures, and inability to stay authenticated after disconnect. In-app browser limitations—no hardware key support in embedded mode, no external browser option, and stale or duplicated windows—worsen failures. MacOS/iOS compatibility problems persist, and missing features like multiple portals, widgets, and persistent sessions reduce usability. Some environments (such as school VPNs) work when a connection finally succeeds, but overall reliability remains poor.
Pros
  • Clean and intuitive interface.
  • When the VPN connects, it provides access as expected (e.g., for school VPNs).
  • Used in enterprise environments to provide organizational VPN access.
Cons
  • Frequent connection failures and instability; often requires uninstall/reinstall or many retries to connect.
  • Persistent login/authentication problems, including MFA failures and missing input parameters, causing repeated sign-ins.
  • In-app browser limitations during authentication: no hardware security key support in embedded browser, cannot switch to external browser, and stale or duplicated browser windows.
  • Significant Apple platform compatibility issues on macOS/iOS (including MacBooks and latest OS updates) causing non-working or unstable connections.
  • Missing usability features and session reliability: no multi-portal support, no saved URLs or widgets, and no persistent login across sessions.

Provided by my employer. Worked only once after a new install. Need to delete and reinstall every time I need it. No other solutions work. Ridiculously useless

On a fresh install of the app, I input my organization’s portal address and reach my organization sign in and MFA steps. Following successful MFA with Microsoft Authenticator the global protect app says authentication failed with error code -1 and to contact administrator for support. My orgs IT was not able to resolve the issue. Organizations should use proven solutions from other vendors.
