User Reviews

Reviewers consistently praise Honolulu Civil Beat for strong, local Hawaii journalism and insightful political commentary. However, usability concerns recur: absence of landscape and iPad support, navigational challenges with limited topic navigation and overview, and some dislike of UI/layout changes. Overall, the content is valued, with calls for improved navigation and platform support.
Pros
  • High-quality, in-depth, locally focused Hawaii journalism.
  • Engaging political commentary from respected Hawaii writers (e.g., Chad Blair, Lee Cataluna).
  • Timely updates and article notifications.
  • Readable presentation of news and accessible formatting for skimming.
Cons
  • Lack of landscape orientation and iPad support (no landscape mode, no iPad app).
  • Clunky navigation and browsing experience: limited topical navigation and no quick overview.
  • UI/layout changes that some users find frustrating and prefer the old layout.

Although sometimes it’s nice to look at the events through rose colored glasses, CB takes them off for you.

This app is basically a blown up phone app but for an inexplicable reason they chose to not let it do landscape which makes me not even use it although the content on civil beat is far and away superior in journalism I end up with Hawaii news now simply because it landscapes.

Civil Beat is an awesome news and commentary site for Hawaii. But the app lags behind. They still have not released an iPad version after several years. Why? They no longer allow you to comment via the iOS app. Instead, you must go to the website. Why? Civil Beat, the news service, deserves a better app than this. They ARE worthy of it.
