The Streetlytron '63 Edition : genuine Mellotronics for your iPhone and iPad.

Brought to you in partnership with Streetly Electronics, the inventors of the mellotron, Streetlytron includes a massive collection of 63* tapes from Streetly's Production Masters - exactly the same tapes that ship with their $8,000 M4000 unit.

Playable with the on-screen 3 octave keyboard or by an attached MIDI controller, Streetlytron exposes every internal control to MIDI, allowing performance and recording without ever needing to touch your device. A gorgeous, silky-smooth, ultra-musical reverb unit generates immense spaces, and 8 programmable preset slots set you up for one-touch performance. Totally playable and totally inspiring, for everything from classic psychedelic, vintage progressive, modern chamber pop or avant-garde dance sounds.

Virtual MIDI and AudioBus, with Inter-App Audio support provided by AudioBus.

No In-App Purchases, no hidden extra costs. Pay once, never pay again.

To keep this remarkable app as small as possible, the in-app samples are recorded at minor third intervals, and most in-app samples are looped for continuous play, with a loop duration of 5 seconds. This results in almost 5x reduction in app size**, yet has virtually no audible difference between this '63 Edition and the top-of-the-range Streetlytron Pro Edition. Sample replay within the app uses an advanced cubic spline interpolator, to delivery premium sonic quality.

User Reviews

Overall sentiment is that Streetlytron '63 delivers a faithful Mellotron-like experience with a rich instrument library and straightforward MIDI workflow, all at solid value. Reviewers repeatedly praise authentic, well-sampled sounds and the 60+ instrument library, plus an intuitive interface that makes MIDI play simple. Recurrent caveats are practical: some users report UI/volume/keyboard quirks on certain devices; AUv3 plug-in support has not appeared yet; and there are concerns about future updates and long‑term support. If you’re after true Mellotron tones with broad sonic options and a responsive workflow—and you’re comfortable with potential upgrade/compatibility caveats—this is a strong choice.
Pros
  • Authentic Mellotron sound with faithful replication of classic tapes.
  • Large instrument library (60+ instruments) offering rich variety.
  • Intuitive interface with easy MIDI keyboard integration.
  • Affordable price with ongoing free updates/instruments.
Cons
  • AUv3 / AU plug-in support not yet implemented.
  • UI, volume, and keyboard issues reported on some devices, affecting playability.
  • Concerns about future updates and long‑term support; potential upgrade/discontinuation risks.

This is an excellent representation of what the Mellotron sounded like. The Mellotron was a beast to work with. Each note played an eight second tape with three sounds on it. The sounds were changed by a control that allowed you to use one of the three channels. It was ungainly, it was heavy, it was divine. And in its day there was nothing like it. It sounded like a Lofi representation of whatever instrument or instruments that were being played. In this app, you get 60+ instruments and they are truly well sampled and sound very familiar to the real Mellotron. If you dared to tour with something like it, it would be very ungainly, the Mellotron and 20 tape sets that would have to be attached and would take God knows how long. So really this is a great, great Plug-in. I use it all the time. Mellotrons have been one of my favorite instruments since I can remember, and I’m obviously not alone. This collection is really good not only for the sound quality, but for the beautifully sampled instruments available. Highly recommended.

Nothing would be finer than an AUv3 plug-in I'm Streetly Tronin' It would make me happy to simply play in my host appy when I'm Tronin' Please make it so. PPPPPPPPPPPlease? ~Roger Rabbit

my main gripe is that it sounds like some heavy audio restoration has been done on some samples (flute particularly) and having them at the higher quality doesn't help much. same reason I wasn't fond of the M3000 app. update - why does this app like to play the samples flat? why is the keyboard so horrible? missed a big mark with this app, needs a lot to make it perfect.
