User Reviews

Overall, users praise the app for rich, contextual content with extensive grammar examples and sentences using kana and kanji, plus clear audio pronunciation. They also value the word-of-the-day feature, the ability to save words to study lists, and the handy UI/widget/browser add-on. However, recurring issues appear across reviews: romaji visibility is hard to hide, notifications can be unreliable or stale, and the word-of-the-day can be inaccurate or repetitive. Users report glitches or ad overlays interfering with use. Some wonder whether paying to remove ads offers enough value.
Pros
  • Rich contextual content with extensive grammar examples and sentences using kana and kanji.
  • Clear, natural-sounding audio pronunciation.
  • Word-of-the-day feature with the ability to save words to study lists and practice (and study random words).
  • Useful UI and features like a widget and a browser add-on; pleasant design.
  • Sentence variations across versions (kana, romaji, English) to help see usage.
Cons
  • Romaji visibility is hard to hide or overly prominent, creating distractions.
  • Notifications can be unreliable or stale, sometimes not updating or repeating the previous day's word.
  • Word-of-the-day content can be inaccurate or repetitive (wrong word, repeated words).
  • Glitches or bugs disrupt usage and ad overlays can interfere with content.
  • Ads and monetization concerns (ads interruptions and value of removing them).

I actually really like this app! I’m learning Japanese right now so it’s better to learn a new word everyday! Especially in their kanji forms! -one question though! Could we maybe add widgets to the app? Then it’d be easier to put it on my screen so people don’t forget! And it’d be extremely helpful.

There are many glitches and odd choices in this app. Like the inability to hide romaji. When you’re a native English reader, you can’t just turn off your English eyes. Even if you are perfectly capable of reading kana. If there is romaji I will accidentally read it AS I’m reading the kana!! No!! And there’s no need to have kana + kanji, then only kana, then romaji. Just do kana +kanji with furigana (changeable in settings) and optional romaji. Also, the daily question says I’ve learned the word before. I usually haven’t. It will also glitch most days. The answer will be “Potato” and it will show a picture of a tiger. With an ad covering half the image.

Update: it’s a $3 one-time purchase not $3 monthly subscription, that’s a lot better deal than I thought. change your review to five stars. Overall, this app is extremely helpful for learning and practicing vocabulary. thank Not only do you have the word of the day, but you can save words to study lists and even study random words. My only complaint is that it feels like an ad plays every other time I hit a button. The “no ads” purchase isn’t that expensive, but considering everything this app offers is almost the same as ad free resources on Tatoeba, I still don’t consider it worth buying.
