Many households use filter pitchers or faucet attachments, while hikers and campers rely on portable filters or purification tablets that use chemicals like iodine or chlorine to disinfect water on the go. For larger-scale purification, cities use water treatment plants that combine several steps to clean water for millions of people. First, chemicals are added to make dirt and particles clump together and sink, a process called coagulation and sedimentation. The water then passes through filters before being disinfected, usually with chlorine or ultraviolet light, to kill any remaining germs. A simpler method that works almost anywhere is solar disinfection, where clear bottles of water are left in direct sunlight for several hours so UV rays can destroy microorganisms.
