User Reviews

Users love PenCake for its simple, elegant design and writing-focused flow, plus reliable cross-device syncing and a valuable one-time premium option. Recurrent drawbacks center on accessibility and feature gating: dark mode is premium-only, free tier is restricted, formatting is limited (no bold/italics), backups/auto-save can be unreliable, and search capabilities are lacking. Overall, it’s praised for aesthetics and writing ease but callers want more formatting, better free features, and stronger safety guarantees.
Pros
  • Simple, elegant, minimalist design that emphasizes writing.
  • Intuitive navigation and organization (easy to swipe between notes; writing flow remains smooth).
  • Cross-device cloud syncing across iOS and Android (manual sync on free tier, automatic sync on paid).
  • One-time lifetime premium license offers good value (no ongoing subscription).
  • Writing-focused environment with font size adjustments and basic formatting support (suitable for poetry and prose).
Cons
  • Dark Mode/accessibility is behind a premium paywall, hindering visually impaired users or night-time writing.
  • Free tier is heavily restricted or perceived as gated, limiting features unless upgrading.
  • Lack of rich text formatting (no bold/italics; limited headings/indents) and other advanced formatting options.
  • Auto-save/backup reliability concerns and potential data loss in some scenarios.
  • Search functionality needs improvement (find/replace and better overall search).

I love how minimal yet functional this app is. It’s super easy to navigate through different notes with a swipe left or right and is very pleasant to use. It also syncs to the cloud (manually in the free version and automatically in the paid version). My old phone was low on space and glitching so the app crashed (my fault for overloading my phone), but after deleting some apps I restarted the PenCake and it saved all my files! Thank you, PenCake!! Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see that both android and iOS apps are pretty much exactly the same. 👍 This is definitely my new favorite writing app. The free version is great but I will be upgrading to premium because they offer a one time payment for a lifetime license. ❤️ P.S. I would love an option to sort notes manually without having to edit all the dates. 🙏

So from my limited experience with this app, it has most of the features docs has. Version history, (it’s only three days but that’s more than enough for my mistakes so I don’t mind) quick saving, (all you have to do is click done after you finish writing) automatic syncing to either google drive or iCloud, font changes, formatting changes, undo, redo, and even buttons to go all the way down or all the way up through the document. The only possible way to improve the app would be adding a find and replace function, but that’s something I can survive without. Also, I copy and pasted a 30,000 word doc into a single entry and it kept running fine. It didn’t change the format of the document either, which is one of the issues I encountered with another app. Overall I think for a completely free app it’s totally worth it
