User Reviews

Overall, the core feature—changing the colors of NYC building lights—has strong wow-factor and nostalgia, and some updates are welcome. Major pain points are the invite-only gate, the requirement to donate for each session, and reliability issues. Many users report long waits for invites, repeated charges for short sessions, and occasional bugs or OS compatibility problems. The recurring theme is a desire for broad access or an affordable, one-time or unlimited option.
Pros
  • Core feature allows changing the colors of building lights (Spireworks), creating a visible, shareable display.
  • The concept has wow-factor and impresses when it works, with nostalgia for its earlier success.
  • Recent app updates are viewed positively by some users.
Cons
  • Invite-only access causes long delays or no access for years, making the app gated and hard to use.
  • Pay-per-session donation model (often around $10 for a 2-minute session) is costly and repetitive; users want a one-time or unlimited access option.
  • Reliability issues: bugs, error messages, and occasional failures to work, plus compatibility problems with the latest OS.
  • Perceived gatekeeping and exclusivity leaving many users feeling the app is only for the wealthy or insiders.
  • Invite requests frequently go unanswered, limiting practical access and usefulness.

Back in the day! This was THE PARTY TRICK of nyc. People were impressed by this! Now there’s a usage fee every time. Keep it invite only, but charge a subscription all access fee and then have fundraiser events. It sucks now, and I rarely use it except as an expensive party trick

Paid the $10 for the two minutes, and my efforts didn’t seem to make any difference in the lights on the building.

I am in nyc and live in Chicago and would love to show it off to family and friends.
