User Reviews

Hiragana Quest is praised as a highly effective, beginner-friendly tool for learning Hiragana and Katakana through story-driven mnemonics and writing practice. It’s often viewed as superior to other apps and engaging, with a strong learning loop of practice and testing. Main drawbacks include missing or low-quality audio, paywalls limiting full access, finicky handwriting recognition, occasional progression glitches, and repetitive story content for some users.
Pros
  • Highly effective for beginners learning Hiragana and Katakana; users report quick progress.
  • Story-based mnemonics paired with writing practice make memorization engaging and memorable.
  • Writing practice with stroke repetition and integrated tests helps reinforce learning.
  • Often considered superior to other apps (e.g., Duolingo) for kana learning.
  • Accessible, clear teaching style that makes complex characters approachable.
Cons
  • No audio or poor audio quality for pronunciation in many reviews.
  • Content is gated behind payment; free access covers only a subset of characters.
  • Writing recognition can be finicky or overly strict, causing unnecessary retries.
  • Occasional bugs or progress blockers prevent advancing (e.g., glitches mid-course).
  • Story content can become repetitive after extended use.

I rarely ever take the time to write app reviews, but as someone who is learning A1 at the most basic foundational level, this app was critical to my Japanese learning!! I really appreciated the accessible language and storytelling. I will say that the writing feature can sometimes be finicky (I would start writing and it wouldn’t register until later) but it is so worth it if you’re serious about learning Japanese.

After using this app for a couple of weeks I can undoubtedly say that it’s done better for learning Hiragana and Katakana than anything else I’ve ever tried. When you download the app you’re immediately given the entire Hiragana alphabet to work with. If you want access to Katakana you must first pay $5 USD, but in my opinion it’s worth it. The only thing I’ve noticed is that for some of the letters, the app can get a little finicky. For example while I was writing the hiragana “そ(so)” I noticed that you need to be nearly perfect or else it will make you retry the letter, while with hiragana “ら(ra)” I wrote it completely wrong and it still let me pass. Other than that very small error, this app is wonderful and I definitely recommend it if you’re serious about learning!

This is the only way I can imagine learning Hiragana and Katakana. I really never thought I would be able to remember so many different characters, and this made me surprise myself with how well I’ve been able to retain them. I did take time in between sets of characters and reviewed a lot before moving to the next set, so of course that helped. The only thing that would make it better would be if there were some simple games to practice the concepts outlined in the bonus lessons. If that was added, this would be a perfect kana app.
