Features & Capabilities

Terraforming Mars is the official adaptation of Jacob Fryxelius' famous board game. Lead a corporation on Mars, launch terraforming projects, and place cards to raise temperature, oxygen, oceans, and habitat. Play against the computer or up to five players online or offline, with the Corporate Era option for deeper strategy and a challenging solo mode that finishes terraforming Mars before generation 14.

This app includes DLCs and maps such as Prelude, Hellas & Elysium, Venus, and Morning Star, plus promos and colonization content. It supports multiple languages (French, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Swedish) and provides links for support and latest news.

User Reviews

Reviewers largely praise the Terraforming Mars app for offering a faithful and visually appealing digital version with strong appeal for solo or local play. However, persistent bugs and crashes, frequent loading/save failures, and online/multiplayer issues (including purchase restoration) dominate the feedback. The tutorials are often broken, the AI is considered not very challenging, and UI/readability problems hinder play. When stable, the game is entertaining and accessible, but ongoing technical problems and insufficient QA undermine the experience for many players.
Pros
  • Faithful digital adaptation of the board game with solid strategic depth.
  • Visually appealing card artwork and presentation.
  • Supports solo play and local/multiplayer options for on-the-go gaming.
  • Entertaining and enjoyable when the game runs smoothly.
Cons
  • Frequent bugs, crashes, and instability; games won't load and progress can be lost.
  • Online multiplayer reliability issues and purchases not recognized offline.
  • Tutorials are broken or get stuck.
  • AI opponents are not very challenging / lack of difficulty.
  • UI/UX/readability issues such as small font and navigation quirks.

This is a long game, something you’d want to play on a plane ride to pass the time. I’ve spent more on this game than any app I have and it’s pretty rude and unprofessional to lock those purchases in airplane mode. I refuse to believe they need to constantly check whether I’ve made the purchases to keep them live on my app.

This app is a fantastic way to play TM over and over with ease. It could be a 5 star game, were it to add two features that are standard in mobile board game adaptations these days in 2026. Missing feature 1: no “undo” button. Almost all digital board game adaptations have one, but TM doesn’t. Play the wrong card or hit the wrong button? Too bad. This game can be crunchy, and the inability to redo an action can be frustrating at times. Missing feature 2: you can only access your DLC if you are connected to the internet. Preludes and Venus Next are great, but if you’re playing this on an iPad and you’re on the road or in an airplane with no wifi, you are stuck playing the base game only. That is no good; other digital board game adaptations let you enjoy DLC without an internet connection (e.g., I can use all my DLC “Root” factions or “Dune Imperium” DLC regardless of internet), so it’s very frustrating that your TM DLC purchases are only sometimes available.
