Features & Capabilities

Playing OkCoral will teach you the basics you need to become a Citizen Scientist for the Coral Restoration Foundation! What is a Citizen Scientist? Citizen Scientists can be snorkelers or divers. As a Citizen Scientist, you can help us answer important questions about how well our corals are surviving and thriving on the reefs. We need this data so that we can keep adapting our methods. How much do I need to know? Not that much! By playing this app you will learn:

  1. How to tell the difference between the two main species we work with
  2. How to identify living and dead coral
  3. What “fused” and “not fused” corals look like. Fused corals are clearly thriving! Let’s get started!

User Reviews

Five stars for helping promote coral education! Minus two stars for forcing people to input a user ID and password at the start. The user ID and password are not needed and only act as reason for people to quit the app without getting the coral education you want them to have. Maybe have them setup the user ID and password when they actually submit data.

I was really excited when I downloaded this app but was quickly disappointed when i started using it. I was not able to pass the quizzes right away given my novice scientific understanding - but extreme interest in - coral reefs. I was eager to learn what I didn’t know until I realized the app doesn’t that offer that information. It simply offers a percentage of the information you got correct until you are left guessing at the images to try to increase that percentage. If I had to guess, guessing to get the correct percentage is not what the creators are looking for in accurate, informed citizen scientists. Offering photo references and new information when quizzes are not passed would make this app actually useful and give those using it an opportunity to learn. You can’t learn if you aren’t offered new information about what you don’t know.
