User Reviews

Users like Bonsai for its broad freelancer toolkit—combining invoicing, time tracking, proposals, contracts, expenses, and a client portal with e-signatures and payment collection. The platform also integrates with common accounting tools and is often described as intuitive. However, recurring issues hold it back: the mobile app lags behind the web in features and usability; users report frequent logouts and authentication friction; payment processing problems and account verification leading to holds; crashes in expense entry; and concerns about data handling and abrupt account actions. Overall, strong potential but reliability gaps persist.
Pros
  • All-in-one freelancer toolkit (invoicing, time tracking, proposals, contracts, expenses, and client management).
  • Built-in e-signature and client portal for signing and tracking payments.
  • Time tracking across projects with a timer and easy edits.
  • Generally intuitive and easy to use for many freelancers.
  • Supports multiple payment options (ACH, credit cards) and useful accounting integrations (e.g., QuickBooks Online).
Cons
  • Frequent logouts and authentication friction on mobile, with initial lack of biometric login and intrusive review prompts.
  • Mobile app parity issues: missing features, limited functionality compared with the web/desktop, and clunky navigation.
  • Payment processing problems and account holds/verification delays, including funds being withheld and disputes.
  • Stability issues like expense-entry crashes or the app shutting down during use.
  • Transparency/privacy concerns such as abrupt account cancellations or opaque verification processes.

SCAM. The worst app and the worst customer service I’ve ever received ( It’s all AI) They hold your money hostage. Takes weeks to be paid (I still haven’t) Clients paid the invoice on July 9th, it’s the 20th still no payment. Took a little over $200 of the payment. I was asked to send in images of my drivers license, which I now regret. I’ve still not been paid. Run don’t walk away from this app it’s a scam.

The web app is phenomenal, but the iOS app has clearly had no real effort put in to bridging the experiences. Timers are buggy and don’t work (they’ll disappear if you switch screens or apps), extremely limited features, no reason to use instead of or in addition to the web app. This was supposed to be a way to manage projects and work kept in Bonsai on the go, but you’re better off logging in to the web app. A shame the design and dev teams aren’t allotted resources to make this app a meaningful companion; a more robust ecosystem would strongly affect my decision to subscribe and spend money on Bonsai.
