Coinoscope – Coin Identifier & Value Guide

Instantly identify coins using your camera. Snap a photo or upload an image to see possible matches, the issue year when visible, and concise details about design and history. The app uses advanced image analysis to explain inscriptions and context, helping both casual collectors and serious numismatists.

Beyond identification, Coinoscope offers market-based value estimates, a global coin database, and a built-in collection manager to save and organize discoveries. You can also search for visually similar coins to confirm identifications. An optional Pro upgrade removes ads and unlocks unlimited analyses, year identification, and ongoing app development.

User Reviews

Users largely report that Coinoscope can identify coin types but often fails to provide accurate dates or values. The most common complaints are intrusive ads that disrupt scanning, frequent inaccuracies especially with older or rare coins, and the need to manually filter results or guess dates. Several reviews note stability issues, camera-related errors, and occasional pricing surprises. A smaller number find it useful for beginners and for identifying coins from foreign languages, but overall satisfaction is mixed due to reliability and user experience. The app may serve as a starting point rather than a precise valuation tool.
Pros
  • It can identify the coin type, giving you a starting point.
  • Useful for beginners: all-in-one information and guidance.
  • Helpful for identifying coins from different languages and estimating rough value.
  • Provides quick match lists to help you explore possibilities.
Cons
  • Ads are extremely intrusive, with autoplay audio, overlays blocking the camera, and persistent upsell prompts.
  • Inaccurate results and dating, especially for older or rare coins; misidentifications are common.
  • Often does not show the exact year or reliable value; users must manually sift through long lists.
  • Camera/app stability issues, including timeouts and errors like 'invalid argument' when taking pictures.
  • Pricing confusion or unexpected charges reported by users.
Recent reviews
Only identifies and shows what coin could be worth. Does not grade, yet, if you just need identification, it identified. I really do not need to identify; I would prefer a grading. A few scans misidentified but my thought is if not a clear enough pic, could do this. Identified my Madison dollar coin as a George Washington dollar.

app can only scan barcodes, not coins — after 15 seconds, app switches to a Google ad

I could barely use the app because a stupid ad with music (that cannot be backed out of) starts playing every few seconds. I’d have to restart the app to use it only to be hit with another add. It worth the time downloading it.
